In 2006, the economy and the impact it was having and is still having, on the powersports industry was and is such that acquiring corporate sponsors was proving to be more difficult. Large, 6-8 week long relays were no longer financially feasible.
WMF, Inc. founders had already organized women’s’ track days through Reg Pridmore’s CLASS (California’s Leading Advanced Safety School). WMF, Inc. had also partnered with the American Honda Rider Education Center in Colton California to host an all-women’s Dirt Bike School. Plus, without thinking about it, WMF had already organized a major adventure ride via Arctic Tour ’93 – Women Riding for Research.
Both experiences led to the creation of On Track for the Cures and Adventure for the Cures. On Track for the Cures ultimately raised $27,000 through partnerships with Tony’s Track Days and SportBike Track Time. While the Adventure for the Cures Programs raised an additional $108,300 for the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation, Komen for the Cure and the Women’s Cancer Foundation.
Along the evolutionary path WMF was taking, more interest and energy began to be directed towards its Adventure for the Cures program; initiated in 2009 when WMF partnered with Coach2Ride taking twelve female road riders through dirt rider training/riding over the course of 900 off road miles within the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.
The Yukon, Northwest Territories and Alaska provided the challenges for Adventure for the cures – Arctic Tour 2011. Coach2Ride partnered again with WMF to facilitate Adventure for the Cures 2012 & 2013 at Hollister Hills, (California) State Vehicular Recreation Area that provided the 3,300 acres on which to train and ride. Collectively, these programs raised $108,300 for breast cancer research; mostly for Komen for the Cure but also for the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation and the Women’s Cancer Foundation.
Another $2,614.00 went to the Hollister Hills Off-Road Association’s Youth Rider Training Program. Partnering with other organizations has been key to WMF’s successful dirt/dual sport/Adventure Riding fundraising events. Fundraising will remain a component of most of WMF’s future dirt/dual sport/Adventure Riding as well.
